Managing yourself

Resilience & Perseverance

A setback is data, not a verdict. Learners practice the bounce-back cycle so a bad grade or failed try becomes the next attempt, not the end.

4 sessions · adapts to all four learner tiers (K–college)

Core tool

The Reset Rep

Feel it (name the emotion) · Face it (what actually happened?) · Fix one thing · Try again.

Before you start: quick self-check

Rate each line from 1 (not yet) to 5 (definitely) before session 1, then again after your Real-World Rep.

I know how to calm down when upset

The sessions

4 sessions, three beats each.

Every session runs Hook → Rep → Reflect, so learners know what to expect each time.

  1. Session 1

    Everyone Misses

    Hook5–10 min

Famous failures: rejected authors, cut athletes, failed first products

    Rep10–30 min

Share (or write privately) one time they failed and what came after

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

  2. Session 2

    Name It to Tame It

    Hook5–10 min

How stress feels in the body; box breathing

    Rep10–30 min

Practice a 60-second reset: breathe, name the feeling, one next step

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

  3. Session 3

    Autopsy, Not Attack

    Hook5–10 min

Compare "I'm bad at math" with "I missed questions 4–7 because…"

    Rep10–30 min

Analyze a sample failed test: what went wrong and one fix

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

  4. Session 4

    Attempt Two

    Hook5–10 min

Show improvement from attempt one to attempt three

    Rep10–30 min

Deliberately hard challenge (puzzle, skill drill); log each attempt and what changed

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

Real-World Rep

Next time something goes wrong, run the Reset Rep and log your second attempt.

By age

How it adapts for each learner tier.

K–5

Sprouts

20 min sessions

"Yet" power word ("I can't do it… yet"). Block-tower or balloon-balance game with multiple tries.

6–8

Builders

30 min sessions

Low-stakes "Friction Reps": short speaking-in-front-of-group turns and tough puzzles, getting a bit harder each round.

9–12

Launchers

40 min sessions

Post-test recovery plan after a real bad grade, plus a college/job rejection role-play and response.

College

Leaders

50 min or self-paced sessions

First-semester setback plan: midterm recovery, when to visit tutoring or the professor, withdrawal vs. push-through decision, and campus support resources.

For teachers & facilitators

Some students carry heavier setbacks than a bad grade. Share school counselor or campus counseling contacts in Session 1, and refer anyone who seems in distress.
