Managing yourself

Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving

Knowing facts is step one; using them on a messy real problem is the goal. Learners practice defining problems, checking claims and testing solutions.

4 sessions · adapts to all four learner tiers (K–college)

Core tool

The IDEAL steps

Identify the problem · Define what "solved" looks like · Explore options and evidence · Act on the best one · Look back and learn.

Before you start: quick self-check

Rate each line from 1 (not yet) to 5 (definitely) before session 1, then again after your Real-World Rep.

I check whether claims are true
I can use what I learn on real problems

The sessions

4 sessions, three beats each.

Every session runs Hook → Rep → Reflect, so learners know what to expect each time.

  1. Session 1

    What's the Real Problem?

    Hook5–10 min

"The bus is always late": is that the problem or a symptom?

    Rep10–30 min

Ask "why?" five times on a real school or campus problem

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

  2. Session 2

    Check the Claim

    Hook5–10 min

Two headlines or posts about the same event that disagree

    Rep10–30 min

Evaluate a claim: who says it, what's the evidence, what's missing

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

  3. Session 3

    Use What You Know

    Hook5–10 min

A classroom fact (fractions, percentages, a science idea) applied to a real task

    Rep10–30 min

Solve a real-world problem with a school concept (budget a party, plan a garden)

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

  4. Session 4

    Solve It Together

    Hook5–10 min

    Community challenge brief

    Rep10–30 min

Teams work through IDEAL and pitch a solution in 2 minutes

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

Real-World Rep

Pick one real problem you face. Work it through IDEAL on paper and try your solution.

By age

How it adapts for each learner tier.

K–5

Sprouts

20 min sessions

"Detective" mysteries with clues; sort facts from guesses. Fix-it challenges (a toy bridge that keeps falling).

6–8

Builders

30 min sessions

Spot the misleading ad or post. Plan a class fundraiser using percentages and a budget.

9–12

Launchers

40 min sessions

Community problem project (school lunch waste, park safety) with evidence gathering and a proposal to a real decision-maker.

College

Leaders

50 min or self-paced sessions

Case-study teams on a real campus or local issue. Written recommendation memo with evidence and trade-offs, presented to peers.
