Knowing yourself

Peer Pressure & Independent Choices

Fitting in shouldn't cost you who you are. Learners spot pressure (in person and online), practice saying no without losing face, and make choices they can own.

4 sessions · adapts to all four learner tiers (K–college)

Core tool

The STOP check

Spot the pressure · Think ahead: what happens next? · Options: name at least two · Pick and own it.

Before you start: quick self-check

Rate each line from 1 (not yet) to 5 (definitely) before session 1, then again after your Real-World Rep.

I can say no to friends when something feels wrong
My choices reflect my own values

The sessions

4 sessions, three beats each.

Every session runs Hook → Rep → Reflect, so learners know what to expect each time.

  1. Session 1

    Spot the Pressure

    Hook5–10 min

Direct pressure ("Just do it") vs. quiet pressure (everyone else is doing it) vs. online pressure (dares, trends, group chats)

    Rep10–30 min

Sort 10 scenarios by type of pressure

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

  2. Session 2

    The Cool No

    Hook5–10 min

Show a no that sounds awkward and one that sounds easy

    Rep10–30 min

Practice 5 ways to say no: joke, excuse, switch the plan, walk away, straight no

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

  3. Session 3

    Your Crew

    Hook5–10 min

Friends who lift you vs. friends who push you

    Rep10–30 min

Map your circle: who makes good choices easier, who makes them harder

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

  4. Session 4

    Stand on Your Own

    Hook5–10 min

Story of someone who went against the group and was glad later

    Rep10–30 min

Role-play a group scenario using STOP, then debrief how it felt

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

Real-World Rep

Use STOP once this week when you feel pressure, big or small. Log what you chose and why.

By age

How it adapts for each learner tier.

K–5

Sprouts

20 min sessions

Puppet scenes about copying, leaving someone out, and dares on the playground. Practice a strong "No thanks" voice and finding a grown-up.

6–8

Builders

30 min sessions

Group-chat pressure, online challenges and trends, sharing photos, cheating on homework. Build a personal "exit line" and a code word with a parent.

9–12

Launchers

40 min sessions

Parties, driving, vaping, academic dishonesty and social media. Plan ahead for 3 real situations they expect this year.

College

Leaders

50 min or self-paced sessions

New-environment pressure: going along with roommates, spending to keep up, skipping class, drinking culture, group-project shortcuts. Write a personal values list and one boundary to hold this semester.

For teachers & facilitators

Situations involving substances, safety or someone being hurt should go to a trusted adult or campus staff. Say this in Session 1 and share contacts.
