Handling Uncertainty & Ambiguity

When there is no script, you can still take a first step. Learners practice breaking open-ended problems into "what I know, what I don't, what I can try."

4 sessions · adapts to all four learner tiers (K–college)

Core tool

The Know / Don't Know / Try card

Three boxes learners fill in whenever a task feels unclear.

Before you start: quick self-check

Rate each line from 1 (not yet) to 5 (definitely) before session 1, then again after your Real-World Rep.

The sessions

4 sessions, three beats each.

Every session runs Hook → Rep → Reflect, so learners know what to expect each time.

  1. Session 1

    No Instructions Included

    Hook5–10 min

Hand out a task with missing directions (build a tower, plan an event) and watch what happens

    Rep10–30 min

Fill the Know / Don't Know / Try card for the task, then attempt it

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

  2. Session 2

    Good Questions Beat Guesses

    Hook5–10 min

Show two people facing the same unclear task: one guesses, one asks

    Rep10–30 min

Practice turning "I don't get it" into one specific question

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

  3. Session 3

    Small Bets

    Hook5–10 min

Story of an inventor or athlete who tested many small ideas

    Rep10–30 min

Try three quick versions of a solution; keep the one that works best

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

  4. Session 4

    Comfortable With Not Knowing

    Hook5–10 min

Name the feeling: "stuck" is a signal, not a stop sign

    Rep10–30 min

Group challenge that changes rules halfway through; debrief how they adapted

    Reflect5–10 min

Write one line on your Rep Card: what I tried, what happened, what I'll try next.

Real-World Rep

Pick one unclear task this week. Fill the card before starting, then note what actually happened.

By age

How it adapts for each learner tier.

K–5

Sprouts

20 min sessions

"Mystery Box" game: guess what's inside using clues, then say one thing they know and one thing they want to find out. Picture-based Try card.

6–8

Builders

30 min sessions

A group project brief with deliberately vague requirements. Teams must write their own three success criteria before starting.

9–12

Launchers

40 min sessions

Open-ended case: "Your part-time job's manager quits mid-shift." Students map options and pick a first move with a reason.

College

Leaders

50 min or self-paced sessions

Take a real ambiguous assignment or syllabus prompt. Write the Know / Don't Know / Try card, draft two questions for the professor, and submit one early draft.
